Introducing Community Unit

Anticipatory Set

Those words sound like a crazy college assignment.  Of course it makes me want to cringe but yet we do it with lessons all the time.  How do we hook students?  How do we find out what they already know?  We have to do this somehow in order to know where to go with a lesson or unit.  In 2nd grade students learn about the community.  I am going to start my unit with a version of the typical KWL chart.  Of course we aren't going to begin learning on Day 1 because my unit takes a while so I have left out the L part on the chart I created.  On Day 1 I will be asking students what they already know and what they want to learn.  I have included this as a Freebie!  This is a sneak peek at the unit that I am creating and will post when finished!

  2. I've already taught communities for this year, but will definitely be saving this for next year. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Teaching about communities is a lot of fun. I have done it many times with my grade 1 and 2 students and we have created 3D communities in the classroom. Right now, I am teaching grade 3 so I haven't done it for awhile. If you are interested in seeing pictures of my 3D community, download the preview from my Creating Communities unit. http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Creating-a-Community
Good luck with your unit. I look forward to following you and hearing more about what is going on in your classroom.
